3G in India by late 2007 - Maran

September 28, 2006

India expects to launch 3G mobile telephone services in the second half of 2007, telecoms minister Dayanidhi Maran said. “The process for introducing 3G service has already been initiated in India, and it is expected that we should be able to launch 3G services by the latter half of 2007,” Maran told an industry conference. India recently allowed four major carriers, including Bharti Airtel Ltd., to conduct indoor trials of mobile services based on the 3G spectrum so they could test equipment. Maran is expected to announce more details of India’s third-generation (3G) spectrum policy on Wednesday afternoon.

Challenges in Commercial 3G Deployment - Huawei

September 18, 2006

Next generation telecom technologies like 3G and HSDPA continues to gather momentum in the region despite doubts about the demand for these services. Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, (”Huawei”), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, will present its experiences in commercial 3G deployment in the Middle East at the 3GSM Middle East and Gulf conference. Prompt response to customer requirements is driving Huawei’s growth in the third generation (3G) mobile systems segment and the company aims increase its subscriber base from its existing eight million subscribers. Globally, 28 of the world’s top 50 telecom operators are Huawei customers and the company is also exhibiting its product line-up featuring cost-effective and 3G-oriented solutions at the conference.

3G testing in India

September 14, 2006

The government has alloted 3G spectrum to MTNL, BSNL, Hutch and Bharti for testing. TRAI will finalise recommendations for pricing and allocation of 3G spectrum by the end of the month, reports CNBC-TV18.

The Department of Telecommunications will take the final call after TRAI makes recommendations on 3G spectrum allocation. The defence sector is expected to vacate 45 mega hertz spectrum by the end of the year. Sources say that 3G spectrum allocation will be made available for less than a month. Strength of spectrum allocation will be 1,000 times less than the actual 3G spectrum. The government’s spectrum allocation to telcos is purely for testing various equipments that will be used, once 3G spectrum kicks in.

Finally some good news kicks in…

3G to grow beyond 1 billion by 2010

September 13, 2006

Over the next four years, the move from 2G to 3G technologies will be more of a leap than a transition, according to a report from analyst firm, Strategy Analytics. The firm  says the 3G market is entering a period of sustained growth and predicts that users of W-CDMA and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO 3G technologies are on target to reach 167 million by the end of this year. That number will jump beyond the one billion mark in 2010, the firm says.

Strategy Analytics also predicts that 3G users will account for more than half of all cellular service revenues by 2010, despite the fact that 3G users only account for just one-third of a 3 billion user wireless market. Phil Kendall, director of global wireless practice said: “Having passed the 100 million subscriber mark in early June 2006, the 3G market will now enjoy a period of sustained growth. Verizon Wireless is driving a real surge in 3G demand in the US, while China and India will start 3G services next year. With Indonesian 3G services already live, and more of the world’s major population centers, such as Brazil, Pakistan and Russia, coming online later in the decade, by 2009, we will see more than one quarter of a billion subscribers being added to 3G networks each year.”

Nokia Readies Vivatel for 3G

September 6, 2006

Nokia has won its first network deal with Bulgarian operator Vivatel. Nokia will improve GSM coverage in the Vivatel network and prepare it for 3G launch by supplying GSM/EDGE/WCDMA 3G/HSDPA radio network and 3G core network, and related services.Nokia will supply Vivatel radio network including GSM and Nokia Flexi WCDMA base stations, and cellular transmission. Nokia will also become Vivatel’s sole 3G core network supplier and deliver Nokia IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Nokia Flexi Intelligent Service Node (ISN) and Nokia MSC Server mobile softswitch. The network will be supported by the multivendor Nokia NetAct network and service management system. Deliveries started in August 2006.

Nokia’s services team will ensure efficient and timely completion of the network project. Nokia will provide project management, network planning, consulting and integration, and maintenance services, and will operate the network during the initial phase of the project.”Nokia’s high-quality, reliable products and their end-to-end capability sealed our decision to select Nokia,” says Richard Shearer, CEO of Vivatel. “This benefits our customers, as initially they will be able to enjoy improved GSM coverage, and later we will launch 3G services.” “This is an important deal to Nokia and we are pleased to be bringing 3G to Bulgaria together with Vivatel,” says Filip Rommelaere, General Manager, Networks, Nokia. “With Nokia solutions, operators can easily evolve their networks to the advanced technologies now being developed, protecting investments.”

Govt to release 60 MHz of spectrum for 3G by ‘07

August 28, 2006

The department of telecommunications has prepared a road map for the release of 3G spectrum, under which it would require the defence ministry to vacate 25 MHz by the end of December 2006, and another 35 MHz by 2007-end.

3G mobile services permit high-speed Internet access using different wavelengths, and allow operators to offer mobile broadband services like video-and audio-streaming, among other things. The road map, if implemented, would mean there being not enough 3G spectrum for the eight pan-Indian mobile telecom operators by the end of this year. Telcos require a minimum of 5 MHz each to run 3G operations.

This implies that only five of the eight mobile operators across the country can operate 3G services by the year-end. The main mobile operators include Bharti, Hutchison-Essar, Idea Cellular, BSNL, Reliance Communications, Tatas, Spice Telecom, and Aircel-Maxis (both of whom are going, or will go for an all-India licence).

In the second year, however, there will be enough spectrum for all the existing telcos, and it might be possible to give them even 10 MHz each to run 3G services. Spectrum of 5 Mhz is enough to support over 3-4 million 3G customers per operator, with heavy data applications.

The defence ministry is now using most of the 3G spectrum bands for its own equipment. However, it has agreed to vacate them in phases, for which it requires new electronic equipment. And that is expected to cost over Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion).

At a meeting cellular operators had with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India a week ago, the discussions centred on how to distribute the scarce resources. One suggestion sought offering the spectrum to five telcos, while the rest shared the infrastructure of the others for the time being.

In that case, customers of telcos that had not been granted 3G spectrum could roam on the networks of the other five operators. This is possible as none of the operators expects to rope in 5 million 3G customers within the next few years.

The selection of the five operators, the COAI suggested, could be based on a parade that took into consideration different parameters - the quantum of investment committed, the cheapest 3G tariffs promised, among other things.

****************************************************************

Have to wait for some more time I believe, as spectrum has to be released by govt. we know how fast the govt works?? :) 3G already deployed in other countries and Guys like me already working for the same… feel bad as Iam not able to have hands-on experience on that here in India :(.
