3G in India by late 2007 - Maran

September 28, 2006

India expects to launch 3G mobile telephone services in the second half of 2007, telecoms minister Dayanidhi Maran said. “The process for introducing 3G service has already been initiated in India, and it is expected that we should be able to launch 3G services by the latter half of 2007,” Maran told an industry conference. India recently allowed four major carriers, including Bharti Airtel Ltd., to conduct indoor trials of mobile services based on the 3G spectrum so they could test equipment. Maran is expected to announce more details of India’s third-generation (3G) spectrum policy on Wednesday afternoon.

Picasa web albums - thanks Google

September 19, 2006

from : Googleblog

I’m so excited about the new version of Picasa that came out today. It has a feature called Picasa Web Albums that lets you post and share your photos online for free with just one click. You can show the world (or just your friends and family) what kinds of pictures you’ve been taking. And best of all, you can even download your friends’ online photos right back to Picasa.

I run around at parties and take photos of people, and now my friends can see the pictures online as soon as I post them. Rather than bugging me all the time to email them around (which I’m too lazy to do), now they’re asking to have the bad shots deleted instead. Some of them even add online comments right to the photos themselves.

We’ve also fixed a whole bunch of things in Picasa. Folders finally work as you’d expect, so people who’ve kept their photos meticulously organized in folders and subfolders can see them displayed the same way in Picasa. And we’ve added a shiny new feature to photo-editing: Save. Your Picasa edits can now be preserved when using other programs. The save feature is even undoable, so you never lose your original files.

And there’s more — you can import into any folder you like, make time-lapse sequences into movies, search by color, create a screensaver with beautiful visual effects, and even re-arrange Picasa’s buttons. Oh, and we also made Picasa work with Google Earth, so you can put information about where you went on vacation into the photos themselves, and then, view your shots on a 3-D globe. Try it all out for yourself at picasa.google.com.

Sillunu Oru kaadhal - review

September 18, 2006

Got this review long back in mail and I don’t want to read until I see te movie.. finally managed to watch the movie in balaji theatre Pondy yesterday :) ,

The story starts with Gautham (Suriya) andKundavi (Jyotika) getting married in a very Tamil ceremony in a little villagein Tamilnadu they are happy and they look wonderful. 6 yearsof bliss, a sweet little daughter Aishwarya (Baby Sharanya) and an idyllic marriage in Mumbai . Gautham and Kundavis’s life is happy, content and as closeto perfect as it can get. Both are working parents and their life is beautifully balanced between work and time at home and outside with their daughter and each other. One day, while searching for something of Aishwarya’s for her school, Jyotika stumbles upon a diary belongingto Gautham. It seems unused for many years and she gives in to her curiosity and reads through it, little knowing that her life was about tochange totally. As she reads through the story of Gautham’s life before he met and married her, we are led through a flashback.

Gautham, a student of B.E. at an engineering college in Coimbatore, meets Aishwarya (Bhoomika) and they fallin love with each other. Aishwarya’s father is an MP and is totally opposed tothis affair and creates much trouble. Despite this, being very much in love and devoted to each other,Gautham and Aishwarya are get married at the Registrar’s. Aishwarya’s father is not about to give up. He sends his goons to beat upGautham. Gautham, valiantly fending them off, is eventually overpowered and lies beaten and bleeding while Aishwarya is taken away. Gautham recovers physically, but is notable to reach Aishwarya and she is gone out of his life. He decides to moveto another city, away from his past, his grief and his broken heart. Before leaving though, he spends a lot of time with his surrogate father, hisuncle, who extracts a promise from him that he would soon findanother partner, get married and be happy again.
Kundavi is in shock that her husband hidsuch a huge and momentous part of his life from her. She is very upset andslowly, the marriage starts to become a little strained. Gautham doesn’t know why, but Kundavi is suddenly busy with work, they don?t spendenough time together, their relationship seems a little distant?Kundavi makes excuses of having to travel on work and leaves Mumbai in searchof Aishwarya. She meets Aishwarya?s father who tells her that for 6 years,Aishwarya has been in Australia and would be returning shortly.Kundavi returns in a few days to Mumbaiand her home.
One day, there is a knock on the door and Gautham opens the door and finds,to his shock,Aishwarya standing there. Emotional turmoil and utter confusion besiege him and he turns to find Kundavi standing behind him,but she is not shocked or surprised.Kundavi starts to speak. What follows is a surprising series of events that gives this entire love-triangle-of-sorts, twists and turns. The ending is poignant happy and yet, sad.

A.R. Rahman’s music needs no review. Iit is topping the charts as we speak and as with all his works, every song captures the mood of the moment and one doesn’t know whether he has made a song for a scene or the scene was shot for his song. I liked Munbe vaa, Machkaari and New york numbers.
For comedy vadivel and santhanam. Santhanam’s bits are cool as usual.
Overall, the direction is smooth and well done. It’s not an action-packed entertainer or a comedy, but the concept of a love triangle and lost-and-found love is refreshingly brought to the audience. This is a Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. It’s cool, it’s refreshing, it’s different. Tou the story is new to Tamil itz handled prperly according to tamil movie viewers.
My rating 3 / 5.

3G testing in India

September 14, 2006

The government has alloted 3G spectrum to MTNL, BSNL, Hutch and Bharti for testing. TRAI will finalise recommendations for pricing and allocation of 3G spectrum by the end of the month, reports CNBC-TV18.

The Department of Telecommunications will take the final call after TRAI makes recommendations on 3G spectrum allocation. The defence sector is expected to vacate 45 mega hertz spectrum by the end of the year. Sources say that 3G spectrum allocation will be made available for less than a month. Strength of spectrum allocation will be 1,000 times less than the actual 3G spectrum. The government’s spectrum allocation to telcos is purely for testing various equipments that will be used, once 3G spectrum kicks in.

Finally some good news kicks in…

Explore the banned books thro’ Google

September 14, 2006

From: Googleblog

For 25 years, libraries and bookstores nationwide have been celebrating the freedom to read during Banned Books Week, which is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the Association of American Publishers, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Association of College Stores, and endorsed by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

Now Google has joined the party. At google.com/bannedbooks, you can use Google Book Search to explore some of the best novels of the 20th century which have been challenged or banned. And while libraries and bookstores around the country celebrate the 25th anniversary of Banned Books Week with special readings, displays, and more, you just might end up with a visit to your local library or bookstore and an old favorite or a new banned book in hand.
